SEL for Washington tracks legislation that relates to supporting student mental health and wellbeing and improving equitable access and opportunity for student learning ensuring the success of every student in Washington schools.

Important Dates in 2020 Legislative Session:
​

February 28, 2020    Last day to read in committee reports (pass bills out of committee and read them into the record on the floor) from opposite house, except House fiscal committees and Senate Ways & Means and Transportation committees.

March 2, 2020    Last day to read in opposite house committee reports (pass bills out of committee and read them into the record on the floor) from House fiscal committees and Senate Ways & Means and Transportation committees.

March 6, 2020*    Last day to consider (pass) opposite house bills (5 p.m.) (except initiatives and alternatives to initiatives, budgets and matters necessary to implement budgets, differences between the houses, and matters incident to the interim and closing of the session).

March 12, 2020    Last day allowed for regular session under state constitution.

Budget Items being tracked

Building Capacity at the Governor's Office of the Education Ombuds (OEO)
Fiscal Year 2020 additional $124,00 to support the following:
•    Capacity to provide regional, proactive workshops designed to prevent conflict and build family-school partnerships 
•    Focus on students experiencing trauma and additional opportunity gaps 
•    Intake role to full-time and 1 Senior Ombuds to full-time
•    Intervention for issues eliminated as part of cuts, such as larger special education concerns 
•    Resources for travel, communications, and language access
•    Initial investment in a feasibility study for DEI capacity-building among families

Fiscal Year 2021 additional $360,000 to support the following:
•    Adds 1 Tribal Liaison/Senior Ombuds position
•    Adds 1 Senior Ombuds specialist in bullying and school safety
•    Further reduces intake and case support wait times
•    Provides more resources for OEO to collaborate with districts to promote inclusive, safe schools through expanded regional trainings.
